OBD Code P0016: Crankshaft/Camshaft Correlation — DO NOT DRIVE

What does code P0016 mean?

Code P0016 (Crankshaft Position – Camshaft Position Correlation) means the ECU detects that the crankshaft and camshaft are out of synchronisation beyond the allowed tolerance.

⛔ SWITCH OFF THE ENGINE NOW AND DO NOT RESTART. On interference engines (the majority of modern engines), continuing to run with timing out of sync will cause pistons to hit valves, destroying the engine completely.

Warning signs before P0016 appears

• Rattling/chattering noise at cold start (timing chain)
• P0011 (over-advanced cam) that has progressively worsened
• Difficult cold starts

Causes

1. Jumped timing chain or belt

The most common and serious cause. Timing chains can stretch and jump a tooth; timing belts can skip if worn or if the tensioner fails.

2. Failed timing chain tensioner

Common on: BMW N43/N46/N47, VW 1.2/1.4 TSI (EA111), Renault 1.2 TCe. The hydraulic tensioner loses pressure and lets the chain rattle loose.

3. VVT actuator stuck advanced (if P0011 preceded P0016)

If the camshaft actuator is seized in the advanced position, the ECU eventually flags P0016. Less severe — timing hardware may still be intact.

What to do

1. Stop the engine, engage hazard lights
2. Call a tow truck — even 500 metres of driving risks total engine failure
3. Have a workshop verify: is the timing physically correct? Is the tensioner functional?
