OBD Code P0217: Engine Overtemperature — STOP IMMEDIATELY

What does code P0217 mean?

Code P0217 (Engine Over Temperature Condition) is stored when the coolant temperature exceeds the danger threshold — typically 120-130°C. This is a critical emergency code.

🚨 Stop the engine NOW. Turn on hazard lights. Do not restart. Call for roadside assistance.

Driving with an overheating engine for even 2 minutes can cause a blown head gasket (£800-2000) or a cracked cylinder block (engine replacement needed).

How to respond

1. Pull over safely and kill the engine — don't switch off at speed, coast to a stop first
2. Turn the heater to maximum heat — this dumps heat from the engine
3. Wait at least 30 minutes before opening the bonnet
4. NEVER open the coolant cap on a hot engine — it's under pressure and will scald you
5. Once cool, check the coolant reservoir level
6. If empty: you have a leak — do NOT drive

Causes

1. Thermostat stuck closed (40%)

The thermostat prevents coolant flowing to the radiator. Replacement is typically DIY possible in 1-2 hours.

Split hose, failed radiator cap, loose fitting. Check for puddles under the car and look for dried coolant deposits on hoses.
