OBD Code P0480: Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit — Overheating Risk in Traffic
P0480 means the ECU has detected a fault in the cooling fan circuit. Without a working fan, the engine overheats at low speeds. Often just a blown fuse or faulty relay.

📋 Sommaire
What does code P0480 mean?
Code P0480 (Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit Malfunction) means the ECU has detected a problem in the circuit controlling the primary cooling fan. Without this fan operating, the engine will overheat at idle and in slow traffic.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Cooling fan not running when engine is warm (verify: look under bonnet with engine hot at idle)
- Temperature gauge rising above normal in traffic
- Air conditioning not cooling properly (fan also cools the condenser)
- Sometimes: fan runs continuously (short-circuit)
Diagnosis
Quick check: Start the engine cold, switch on the A/C — the fan should start within seconds. If it doesn't, begin fault-finding.
Causes
1. Blown fuse or relay (40%)
The simplest cause. Check the underbonnet fuse box for the cooling fan fuse and relay.

👉 Cooling fan relay on Amazon UK — £6-15
2. Broken wiring (20%)
Inspect the harness from the fuse box to the fan motor.
3. Failed fan motor (30%)
Test: apply 12V directly from the battery to the fan motor connector. If it spins, the motor is fine — the fault is upstream (relay/wiring/module). If it doesn't spin, replace the fan.
👉 Cooling fan assembly on Amazon UK — £40-150
4. Fan speed control module (10%)
On variable-speed fans, the control module can fail.

On the motorway, yes (ram air keeps the engine cool). In town, NO — stop-start traffic without a fan = overheating = head gasket risk.
