OBD Code P0236: Turbo Boost Sensor Range/Performance — Pipe or Sensor?

P0236 means the MAP/boost pressure sensor is reading out of expected range. Often a split boost pipe — check the hoses before buying a sensor or fearing turbo failure.

What does code P0236 mean?

Code P0236 (Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance) means the MAP sensor reading is inconsistent with what the ECU expects based on other parameters (throttle position, RPM, airflow).

Only affects turbocharged vehicles: diesel (HDi, TDCi, TDI) and turbocharged petrol (TFSI, TSI, EcoBoost, TCe).

Symptoms

  • Check engine light
  • Significant power loss — limp mode common (50-60% power)
  • Sluggish above 2000 RPM
  • Occasional hissing sound (boost leak)

Causes

1. Split or dislodged boost pipe (25%)

A boost pressure spike can pop a hose off its fitting. Inspect all hoses between turbo → intercooler → throttle.

2. Failed MAP sensor (40%)

The sensor drifts or fails. Measure sensor voltage at idle: typically 1.0-1.5V. At full boost: 3.5-4.5V.

3. Turbocharger underperforming (20%)

Worn compressor blades or a stuck wastegate. Diagnose with live boost pressure data.

4. EGR or intake deposits reducing flow (15%)

Heavy soot deposits reduce air volume, dropping apparent boost.

Can I drive with P0236?

In limp mode only. The ECU limits boost to protect the engine. Avoid hard acceleration. Inspect the boost pipes first (free, takes 5 minutes).
