OBD Code P0011: Camshaft Position Over-Advanced — Oil Change First

What does code P0011 mean?

Code P0011 (Camshaft Position A — Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance Bank 1) means the variable valve timing (VVT) system is holding the intake camshaft in an excessively advanced position.

Good news: in 70% of cases, the fault is degraded engine oil preventing the VVT actuator from returning the camshaft to the correct position. An oil change resolves it.

Common on: VW/Audi TSI/TFSI, BMW N-series, Hyundai/Kia 1.6T, Honda i-VTEC.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (usually solid)
  • Rough idle, especially when cold
  • Difficult cold starts
  • Slightly reduced low-RPM performance
  • Marginal fuel consumption increase

Causes & fixes

1. Degraded or incorrect engine oil (70%)

The VVT actuator is oil-pressure operated. Sludgy, old or wrong-viscosity oil can't retract the camshaft from the advanced position quickly enough.

Immediate action: check oil condition. Black, thick oil → change immediately.

2. Sludged VVT actuator solenoid

Oil varnish deposits block the solenoid piston. An engine flush additive (add to old oil 500 miles before service) often frees it.

3. Failed VVT solenoid (OCV)

If an oil change doesn't resolve it, test the oil control valve solenoid (2-wire connector, resistance should be 8-15Ω).

Repair cost

Fix DIY? Cost
Oil + filter change £25-50
Engine flush additive £10-15
OCV solenoid £25-70
VVT actuator £80-200 + labour
